HISTORY OF KARIM INTERNATIONAL

 

KARIM INTERNATIONAL began modestly 1976. Its started its operations in the old part Dhaka city working as publishers’ representatives, indentors and consultants to the different institutional buyers of international books and journals. The book trade services at the time was inadequate. Our entry ensured availability of specialized and diversified services needed to acquire publications from abroad.

 

KARIM INTERNATIONAL rendered services to the local publishers in promoting their publications abroad. We participated, therefore, in the 1984 World Book Fair in New Delhi; the Frankfurt International Book Fair in 1989, 1992, and 1999. For many years we worked as the main supplier of Bangladeshi publications to the Library of Congress, which is the single biggest purchaser of publications from all over the world.

 

We also campaigned to ensure that international publishers are allowed to participate in the annually organized Dhaka Book Fair. KARIM INTERNATIONAL’s presence in 1995, 1996, 1997, as well as 2004 Dhaka Book Fair meant that book lovers can benefit from the availability of wide range of international titles. We continue to campaign for qualitative improvements in the Fair in terms of making it truly international.

 

Consistent expansions in our range of services over time made us shift to our current location—Yasin Bhaban, Monipuri Para—in 1987. Alongside generic promotional activities on behalf of our international publishers, KARIM INTERNATIONAL is the first to organize Book Exhibitions that made it possible for readers to know the titles made available. Such exhibitions were organized not only in the capital city of Dhaka but also in Chittagong and Rajshahi.

 

In 1997, KARIM INTERNATIONAL opened the first English Language Teaching (ELT) Book Shop in the country. It is located in the premises of the British Council Teaching Centre, Dhanmondi. An UK University Press has described it as the “best ELT book ship in Asia.” Its focused services are catering aptly to expanding ELT publication requirements of the country. Language learning is getting both governmental and private patronization.

 

KARIM INTERNATIONAL continues to channel the strength of its operational flexibility in undertaking new ventures; continues to solicit constructive inputs from all concerned in its quest to learn better in order to serve best. #10 We ask for support in our work as agent of change: extracting proportionate playing field for international publishers in the areas of promotion,  lobbying to lessen taxation on import of books, heightening awareness in book lovers regarding the dangers of buying pirated editions of  international titles.
